Division II National Championship

The Swami had initially planned to try to attend the DII National Title game, but the time was bad along with nasty cold and ice, so he will stick with watching it from home. The hometown team from Northwest Missouri State is going  for another title and…ahh, who is the Swami kidding, the preview will be best from a Northwest Alumnus, so with a guest column, here is Buckeye Will!

There won’t be 17,000 Northwest fans this year; the weather forecast keeping many (including me) away.  I love my Bearcats, but 12 degrees and snow will keep me on the blue couch with a big bowl of espinaca dip.

Northwest Missouri State (Ranked 31st amongst ALL NCAA levels; bring on Texas!) v North Alabama are the two best Div. II teams right now.  While UNA has one loss to an FCS opponent, the Lions are playing great football and are heading to Children’s Mercy Park healthy.  Northwest, on the other hand, got banged up by a very physical Ferris State last Saturday.  Starting QB Kyle Zimmerman left the game with a sprained AC joint in his right, throwing shoulder.  This AC injury is the same injury that severely hampered Jeff Ziemba last year.  Also, Shawn Bane, the speedy wide receiver is out for the NC game.

Saturday’s prediction: A low scoring game hampered by the weather with a few turnovers sprinkled in for fun.  Big Green wins a record 6th National Championship in a de facto home game. Northwest 14, UNA 7

So there you have it folks! NWMS picks up another championship and bowl season kicks off!

Now have a Merry Christmas and we’ll pop in from time to time while everyone is bowling. Until then… THE SWAMI!

  1. The noteworthy item that I should have started my my guest column with: The Northwest Senior class has an opportunity to win more National Championships (3) than have losses (2) with a win against North Alabama on Saturday.

Since this is Monday, and we know how Saturday afternoon / evening finished, Northwest Missouri State University won a Div. II record 6th National Championship at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas. North Alabama reached the red zone twice; once throwing an interception in the end zone, and the second settling for a field goal late in the first half. Neither offense was successful until late in the 2nd quarter when NW went with junior Randy Schmidt in the wildcat formation and drove for the game’s first touchdown. That is all Northwest needs as the number #1 rated D2 defense stymied UNA all afternoon. Schmidt provided a Sports Center Top 10 moment with his one handed catch in bounds that lead to a Northwest touchdown (only to be out done by Youngstown State a couple of hours later going all Noah Spence).

Div. II window of opportunity is now. Northwest’s Head Coach, Adam Dorrell accepted the Head Coach position at Abilene Christian University (FCS). Defensive Coordinator Rich Wright is promoted to Northwest Head Coach.
